Associated Tests: | Other tests that are part of the complete blood count are also done at the same time such as hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cell count, platelet coun and white blood cell count. |
General Information
Red blood cell indices is a broad term referring to mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH). The red blood cell count, hematocrit value and hemoglobin levels are used to calculate those parameters. These calculations offer information about red blood cell volume and their hemoglobin content.
What does an abnormal test result mean?
Anemia has an impact on these parameters, either increasing or decreasing their result. Each type of anemia has a different impact on mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration and mean corpuscular hemoglobin calculations. These test results will help address the cause of this health issue. In addition, certain drugs and liver diseases can affect these parameters.
Mean corpuscular volume (MCV)
Upward
- Anemia caused by a vitamine B12 and folate deficiency
- Liver disease
- Alcoholism
- Hyperglycemia
- Certain drugs
Downward
- Anemia caused by an iron deficiency
Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC)
Upward
- High rate of cholesterol or fat in blood
Downward
- Anemia caused by an iron deficiency
- Chronic blood lost
Mean corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH)
Upward
- High rate of cholesterol or fat in blood
- Anemia
Downward
- Anemia
What you need to know before the test
Before going for blood tests, a procedure or other exam, it is best to always bring a list of all the drugs you take (prescription, OTC and natural health products). Unless told otherwise, you should take your medication as usual on the day of the test. When in doubt, ask your pharmacist for more information.
