Before going for a medical examination or test
General Information
There are several things to consider before going for a clinical examination. Occasionally, our nerves get the better of us and we overlook certain steps that are essential to the preparation process. That being said, we have drawn up a list of recommendations to ensure that the preparation process, the examination itself and your return home are as smooth and worry-free as possible. Although these recommendations are quite general, they apply to most clinical tests prescribed by physicians. If you have any questions or need clarification, do not hesitate to call the centre where you will be undergoing your test.
A few days before the test
- Read the preparation protocol to find out what medications to take, whether there are dietary requirements, the location of the test, etc.
- Purchase all the products needed to prepare for the test.
- Notify employer of absence, if applicable.
- Have someone lined up to take you to and from the hospital.
- Remember to hire a babysitter for the children for the duration of the test and once you return home. Some tests require rest afterwards.
- Avoid making other appointments on the day of the test.
The night before and the day of the test
- Leave your jewellery at home. It will be less cumbersome.
- Make sure you have a bit of money with you.
- Take a bath or shower the night before.
- Consider bringing a bathrobe, shoes, case for glasses or contact lenses and a container for dentures.
- Bring a large bag to carry your personal effects.
- Wear loose fitting, comfortable and easy to remove clothing.
- Bring reading material.
Documents for the hospital
When going for a medical examination, it is imperative that you have certain documents with you. Forgetting these documents can, on occasion, lead to the cancellation of your procedure. It is therefore important to make sure that you have all the required documents.
- Valid hospital card
- Valid health insurance card
- Referral from treating physician
- Prior results
- Comprehensive list of medications, whether prescription, over the counter or natural products, as well as a list of drug allergies.
